How Much Do YOU Love the Prophet ﷺ?

A very famous story narrates…

that there was once a poet in the city of Delhi, Mirza Qateel, famous for praising the Prophet. An Iranian citizen decided to visit this poet assuming that he was a great pious scholar. On arriving in Delhi, he was informed that this poet has gone to the barbers. He proceeds towards the barbers and what does he see? The poet is having his beard shaved. He cries out “O, the one who claims to love the Prophet, you are shaving your beard!” The poet replies, “Yes, but I am not hurting anyone’s feelings.”

They continued their debate. Finally, the Iranian exclaimed, “You claim that you are not hurting anyone’s feeling;, I warn you that you are hurting the feelings of the one who is the leader in this world and the hereafter, the Prophet.” On hearing this remark, he fainted; when he regained consciousness, he accepted and admitted his mistake, repented to Allah, he Most Forgiving and thanked the Iranian for guiding him.

Some men claim to love the Prophet ﷺ but still do not keep a beard. What kind of love is this? To be honest, when a person loves someone, he will fulfill every command or wish of his. He would take it upon himself to see to it that whatever his love wants, that is fulfilled.

We cannot see the love a person possesses in his heart for someone except by his actions. We have been guided to judge people according to their apparent and visible actions. In the age of media our whole concept of what beautiful or handsome is has been distorted by what the market wants to sell to us. We are just becoming slaves to our whims and desires, and to an extent, to the whims of those running the media.

People have become so engrossed with how the world in general perceives them that they find a clean-shaven man more handsome and masculine than the one with a beard – exactly the opposite to what the Messenger ﷺ taught, did and was as a man. Yet without a doubt, he ﷺ was the most handsome of men to walk the face of this Earth.

In spite of being the slaves of Allah and the followers of his Messenger ﷺ, still we have come to such a state where we do things only because we fear the wrath and punishment of Allah. That’s how we are raising our kids nowadays. Many a time, the fear is instilled to such an extent that the person forgets the blessings and love that Allah has –which is 70 times more than a mother for his slave. We tend to forget that his mercy encompasses his anger.

Why not aim for the stars rather than for the roof above our heads. Why not think that this is what would make Allah happy. This is what would make the Prophet ﷺ smile when he looks at his followers on the Day of Judgement and at the banks of Al Kauthar. Such a person can look and say proudly that WE are HIS people, HIS Ummah! Those who love him – obey his commands and wishes – please Allah and submit to his commands.

Family and Life

Some men give the excuse that their mothers or wives prefer them without a beard. You have to please your mother and wife/s for sure, but all that we need to keep in mind in the hustle and bustle of life is that we have Someone greater and mightier to please. The love for and obedience to Allah overrules our love for anything and anyone else.

He who shaves his beard to please a woman, deserves neither.

Many times, it happens that it’s the job which requires shaving the beard, and that he would lose his job if he does not shave. Usually in most cases it’s peer pressure and the office environment –but then again at times the employer could be creating problems too. A person can talk to his seniors and explain that the beard is a religious requirement; in that case, the employer cannot force a man to shave it. When was the last time you saw a Sikh being forced to remove his turban? Exactly, because they are solid on what they believe. Shamefully, we aren’t.

Some men do not keep a beard, saying that if we keep a beard and do some wrong action, we will be disgracing the beard and showing disrespect to the beard. The sentiment of such people outwardly seems appropriate. It seems as if they desire to uphold the honor and status of the beard, but yet if we ponder slightly deeper, we will recognize this as a trick of shayân. Through this very trick, shayân has deceived many and involved them in this act.

One should bear in mind a basic principal that to mock any of the distinguishing features of Islam and to degrade or disgrace any of the Sunnahs of Prophet is tantamount to kufr, whereby a person leaves the fold of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ has affirmed that the beard is a distinguished sign of Islam and a unanimous practice of all the Prophets.

Accordingly, those people who consider the beard as loathsome and detestable –on the basis of it being a distortion of nature—and then they prevent those amongst their relatives who aspire to keep a beard from doing so, or they mock at them for holding firm… and, likewise, those people who will not allow their daughters to marry without the bridegroom shaving his beard, such people should seriously ponder over the plight of their îmân.

If it becomes most likely that one would lose his job over insisting on growing his beard, then he should weigh his situation and see which option would constitute more harm to him, shaving the beard or losing that enslaving job. Based on that, and after consulting with some people of knowledge, he should take the course that would be most pleasing to Allah because at the end of the day rizq and life is all in the hands of Allah and not in that of his employer.

What we need to think of is that if we do something to attain the love of Allah, He won’t let it go waste. Taking a risk with jobs is no small matter. Allah will multiply and magnify the love you show towards Him and His commandment; He will take care of you like He does for the birds who go out and don’t know where they will find food for the day.

Groom That Awesome Manliness

Another reason why the employer may not like a beard is that the person has a very unkempt beard. On that point.

Now that we have established that keeping a beard is mandatory, the next step is grooming it. No one likes to see a guy with messed up/ unkempt and groggy beards looking as though they just got out of bed and walked out the door. I personally know people who are strong on keeping a beard but who forget the emphasis that the Prophet put on cleanliness.

The Prophet ﷺ recommended combing hair, and said:

Whoever has hair, let him take care of it. (Abû Dâwûd)

Ibn Ḥajar said that Ibn Baṭṭâl said: “Combing means tidying the hair of the head and beard, and oiling it.”

This is what the Prophet ﷺ said about his Sunnah:

Whoever turns away from my Sunnah has nothing to do with me. (Bukhâri)

In another adîth,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the mosque when a man came in with disheveled hair and beard. The Messenger of Allah motioned with his hand that he should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allah said, “Isn’t this better than that one of you should come with his head disheveled, as if he were a shayân?!” (Mâlik)

A person should shampoo his beard occasionally, comb it and apply oil to maintain it. Taking care of the beard improves the general, overall appearance of the person also.

It’s about time we started to look like men, at least. Don’t let the world decide what a man should look like, or what looks good on you and what doesn’t. Embrace the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and for sure you won’t be let down when it comes to beauty and looking good.

Each beard is different and everyone has his own unique set of circumstances and stories about growing his beard. You may have the initial uneven growth or itching, but once it’s all shaped and groomed, it’s going to be a different story from then on…

There have been instances in the past when I was working at an engineering firm as a student that my supervisor pressured me to shave so “I had the chance to go inside pieces of equipment when they were brought off line”. There really was no other need for me to shave so I had to resist and eventually they agreed to let me keep it long as I kept a shaving kit handy in case of “emergencies”.

Of course at the same time, there are certain professions that you absolutely cannot get by without a face-sealing face mask such as Plant Operations in which case I had to shave every day I was working. There are legitimate grounds for that though, as I would frequently be in areas where breathing in the dust and chemicals would cause severe breathing issues down the line or knock me out

There are legitimate grounds for that though, as I would frequently be in areas where breathing in the dust and chemicals would cause severe breathing issues down the line or knock me out

Beards are awesome! In some professions, like Firefighters, I understand why they can’t have a beard; safety reasons. But other than that, I think men should be allowed to have a beard. If men can start going into women’s restrooms, doggone it, let a man grow his beard. (y)

Beards are awesome! In some professions, like Firefighters, I understand why they can’t have a beard; safety reasons. But other than that, I think men should be allowed to have a beard. If men can start going into women’s restrooms, doggone it, let a man grow his beard. (y)

Hello everyone, I have had to deal with this quite a bit, I am a Romani traveler and a Muslim, so I start a new job pretty much once a year, only once have I had an employer have issue with my beard after I explained. A lot of times it helps to compare Quran and Hadith to the Book of Leviticus to help get your point across. Most restaurants tell employees they must shave but their company policy actually allows beards if you wear a hair net over it. Most employers will work with you.
Getting them to be okay with you doing salat is a different story though.

Sigh. Not sure why anyone would feel the need to say: “When was the last time you saw a Sikh being forced to remove his turban?” given that this is a legitimate issue in workplaces/airports, and racist discrimination and Islamophobia are not a site of competition. Also don’t like this whole “Exactly, because they are solid on what they believe. Shamefully, we aren’t” rhetoric that assumes people of other faiths are this solid mass of religiosity as opposed to poor, misguided Muslims. Again, Sikhs do remove turbans/Black people do straighten their hair. When you’re lower class/an immigrant kid/a million other reasons and you’d rather keep that job/not be laughed at you do what you do.
